SPIRIT OF THE MIND - THOUGHT DRIFT

Have you ever wondered why your mind wanders off from time to time? Where does it wander to?

You’ll be doing something and the next thing you know, your thoughts are on something else completely different. What is that?

It’s the Spirit of Your Mind, and you’re experiencing Thought Drift.

Ok, what is the Spirit of the Mind? Is that meant to suggest that the Mind has a Spirit? Let’s find out.

Many might be tempted to think “Spirit of the Mind” is a religious term or somehow referring to something about God. It is not.

Yes, it is a phrase used by a writer in the Bible, but the question is posed to everyone, religious or not. What is the Spirit of Your Mind?

We all have a Spirit of the Mind, because we all have a mind.

Your Mind is your personal Thoughts, your personal Will/Desires and your personal Emotions. Theres nothing religious about that.

Think of it this way. When you are not trying to think about something, what do you think about? That is the Spirit of Your Mind!

What are the Thoughts of your Mind when we are not intentionally thinking about anything? Where do your thoughts drift to? The Spirit of the Mind is what controls that. The Spirit of the Mind sends you to a place.

The word Spirit comes from the Greek word pneuma. It is comprised of 2 words, “pneo”, which means to blow, and “ma”, is the result of the action of blowing, the air set in motion. Pneuma/Spirit is air set in motion.

Pneuma can be helpful air, Pneumatic tools, or harmful air, Pneumonia.

If we couple Pneuma with “Thought Drift”, the question then becomes what Pneuma is blowing on your mind? What force is setting your thoughts adrift?

Another word used for Pneuma is Breath. Everything has breath. Plants breathe in and out oxygen, insects breathe through their thorax, animals and people breathe similarly, and even the rocks have breath.

What is being breathed on you, and where is it blowing your thoughts to?

We all know something about breath, you can have good/fresh breath, or you can have bad/smelly breath!

Is bad breath being blown on your mind and influencing your thoughts?

What does the breath of the social media posts you read smell like? How about movies you watch? What about the news? Your affiliations and associations, what does their breath smell like? What do those texts and voicemails breathe on you? Or TikTok, IG, X? Everything has breath!

That breath is what your thoughts defer to. Everyone’s thinking has a default mode. What is your default mode?

The default mode is the place where your thoughts drift unconsciously.

Thought Drifting or the Psychological term Mind Wandering is quite common. It is the brains default process when there is no primary task that is currently required.

96% of American adults report that they experience daily Mind Wandering a.k.a. Thought Drift, and that it occupies up to 50% of their waking day. Some are drifting even now as they are reading or listening.

This wandering of the mind is not the same as daydreaming. Daydreams are intentional, Mind Wandering or Thought Drift thinking is based on previous information received. Thought reversion. What is your mind reverting to? What thoughts are on a repeating loop in your mind?

It has been reported that 70-80% of the brain’s metabolism is taken up by spontaneous activity or unsolicited thoughts and the rest is left to deal with task-based activities and issues.

That means we’re only on task 20% of the time, what are we thinking about during the other 80%?

Where are those unsolicited stimulant winds being blown in from?

Our minds never rest! What is the Mindset of Your Mind? What is Your Mind Set On doing or not doing? What are Your Thought Patterns?

Mind Wandering is one of the fastest-growing topics of the last few decades. We are constantly generating imaginative thoughts that are unrelated to our external circumstances.

We have been encouraged to bring our thoughts into captivity. 2 Corinthians 10. They should not be allowed to just run wild.

It is important for us to know Who or What has/is shaping Our Thoughts? We are responsible for our own Mental Temperament.

Take inventory of the things that you think about unintentionally. Those are the thoughts that are driving your life.

If you like the direction you’re heading in then don’t change, if you don’t like where you’re headed then change your meditative thoughts.

What you meditate on creates structural changes in your brain. It’s like weightlifting, you get stronger as you continue to do those mental reps.

Are you growing and getting stronger in the areas that you want?

Lifting the wrong thing, the wrong way, can do extensive damage to your soul. Meditation is just as vital as Medication!
